RAC Foundation reveals cheap car insurance risk of loud music
Research by the RAC Foundation has found that playing loud, fast music in a car can prove to be a danger to the driver and other road users.
The results of the study suggest that motorists who have thumping music playing in their vehicle are more likely to lose out on their cheap car insurance for a number of reasons, including motoring convictions and accidents.
The RAC Foundation found that drivers who have loud music with a fast beat are twice as likely to run a red light as those who do not have such music playing. Driving through red lights can mean an increase in the likelihood of being involved in an accident, and a conviction for running a red will undoubtedly mean an increase in the cost of motor insurance.
The accident rate for those who play loud music was also found to be much higher than average, with around double the number of crashes recorded for fast music lovers.
A spokesperson for the RAC Foundation said: "We would ask motorists to be responsible when driving and not put lives at risk for the sake of blasting out the latest tunes.
"Although the decrease in reaction time from playing loud music translates to mere fractions of a second, on the UK's busy roads, this reduction could mean the difference between a hit or a miss."
However, loud music does not only affect the person driving the car. Other motorists may be distracted by very noisy music being pumped from a passing vehicle and turn to look, thus increasing their chance of an accident and the resultant loss of their cheap car insurance rate.
On top of these facts, drivers who play loud music might also be risking their hearing. The Environment Minister Ben Bradshaw revealed that people exposed to similar levels of noise at work as are heard from some cars would have to wear ear defenders.
