Drivers face huge hikes

Cheap car insurance is becoming increasingly harder to find, according to one of the UK's leading cheap quote comparison specialists.

Over the past 12 months, it says, there has been a 31% rise in the cost of a full comprehensive policy.

Much of the rise is attributable to the £400 million insurers had to pay out to the Motor Insurers Bureau (MIB) to meet the cost of accidents caused by uninsured drivers. Other factors cited included Britain's "compensation culture" and the consequent cost of accident claims.

However, some hold out hope that cheap car insurance won't disappear altogether and that specialist online providers will continue to find drivers the kinds of competitive quotes that can make a difference.

Aside from continuing the hunt for cheap car insurance, drivers have been advised to keep motoring costs down in other ways. "Making changes to your driving habits such as slowing down and driving more carefully will not only help make Britain's roads safer but also leave you better off financially," says one expert.
