Cheap car insurance firm supports 1-year learning proposals
A cheap car insurance company has been looking into the difficulties that young drivers have when it comes to passing their test.
Churchill Car Insurance discovered that just 30% of learner drivers manage to pass their driving test within the first year, with another 30% getting through over the one-year mark. However, 8% of motorists reported to the researchers that they were unable to throw away their L-plates for five years or more.
The most common stumbling point on the driving test that the motor insurance firm came across was adequate observation at junctions, something which 21% of young drivers reported as being a reason for failing their test.
Other common errors included mistakes when reverse parking, reversing around a corner and parallel parking, although 11% also said that they had driven at inappropriate speed in their test.
A spokesperson for Churchill Car Insurance said: "Learner drivers need to accept that an investment of time, money and commitment are necessary to make them fully equipped and confident motorists.
"All learners are different and each will require a different level of practice to make them a well-rounded driver. This is especially true for younger motorists who will be yet to develop the confidence and risk awareness needed to be a really safe driver."
Referring to the recent suggestions to raise the age at which motorists can take their test to 18, the cheap car insurance company's spokesperson continued: "Our research illustrates just how prudent and necessary these proposals are.
"If learner drivers, particularly those aged under 25, invest in their training, they will become better drivers, have fewer accidents, and help make Britain's roads safer for all drivers."
