Cheap car insurance firm warns of crashback effects
A cheap car insurance company has found that two in five people involved in car crashes suffer flashbacks about the incident.
The research, which was carried out by More Than, found that some drivers are very badly affected by being in a car accident and have "crashback" experiences. Symptoms include reliving the event in their heads, poor confidence while driving, and erratic behaviour on the roads.
According to the UK motor insurance firm, 16% find themselves constantly thinking about their accident whilst they are driving and 14% dream of the incident at night.
Some of those suffering crashback effects find it hard to get back in the driving seat at all, with 2% saying that it took six months to start driving again.
A spokesperson for the cheap car insurance company said: "With over 200,000 casualties a year on British roads, as well as countless minor collisions, there are a lot of potential crashback sufferers out there.
"Although not often talked about, this sort of anxiety and stress can be serious and people need to take time and concentrate on feeling better.
"Drivers should not feel under pressure to get behind the wheel again before they're ready. It can add stress, meaning it takes longer to get back to normal, and could lead to unsafe driving behaviour."
A spokesperson for More Than's car accident counselling service advised drivers who are suffering from crashback effects to talk about their thoughts and feelings.
