Vehicle modifications may impact cheap car insurance

A cheap car insurance website is urging motorists to let their insurers know before they make any modifications to their vehicles.

Drivers who modify their vehicles in any way, from getting leather upholstery to installing a body kit, risk having their motor insurance invalidated should they need to make a claim, GoCompare.com is warning.

A spokesperson for the cheap car insurance site said: "For many people, their car is a way of expressing their personality and they are prepared to spend thousands of pounds to improve both the look and the performance of their vehicle. Often they may only add a few pounds to your annual premium but the cost of being underinsured could ultimately be far greater."

She warned that motorists who don't inform their insurer about alterations and then need to claim on their car insurance after a break-in or accident could find that they are only insured for the basic vehicle or, worse, have their policy invalidated altogether.

The GoCompare.com spokesperson went on: "Some insurance companies will not cover certain modifications so it's worthwhile contacting your insurer before making any changes to find out how this will affect your premium. Even if you bought the car second hand and a modification has been made by the previous owner, you will still need to declare this on your motor insurance policy."
