Thatcham study won't help fight fraud, cheap car insurance firm says

Cheap car insurance company Norwich Union has played down the effect that Thatcham research into whiplash will have on claims and the cost of motor insurance.

It had been hoped that the research, which stated that motorists would be unlikely to suffer whiplash in accidents that happen at less than 10mph, could be used to stop fraudulent claims going through.

The research also proposed that insurance companies could start providing cheap car insurance based on the safety equipment in a vehicle.

However, Norwich Union refuted the idea that the Thatcham report would help them fight low speed whiplash claims from fraudsters.

A spokesperson for Norwich Union said: "Although in theory it might be difficult to obtain whiplash, particularly at low speeds, there are extenuating circumstances, such as the facing direction of the driver's head at the time of collision, that make it difficult to prove that whiplash was not caused."
