Cheap car insurance firm carries out traffic jam survey

According to new research by a cheap car insurance company, UK drivers spend the best part of two weeks a year stuck in traffic.

82% of drivers interviewed by Zurich felt that traffic jams were worse than they were five years ago, with the M25 and M1 being reported as two of the most dreaded roads for queues.

Motorists gave a range of activities that they used to combat the boredom that comes with worsening congestion. The most common was using eating or drinking behind the wheel, whilst chatting on a mobile phone and getting out the car for a moment to stretch their legs were also common strategies for beating boredom.

However, the cheap car insurance firm found that boredom wasn't the only effect that traffic jams have on the drivers caught in them. 61% reported that they felt frustration when in a queue, 38% complained of stress and 21% said that jams made them get hot under the collar.

It isn't all bad, though, as some motorists showed that they used innovative tactics for keeping their spirits up. 32% admitted that they sing along with their music while gridlocked, whilst 31% said they liked to daydream and 23% had a good long chatter with themselves.

A motor insurance spokesperson for Zurich said: "Despite our love affair with the car, traffic jams are a fact of life. It's always best to check the travel news before setting out, but if you do get caught up in traffic, don't get frustrated with them, find a way to remain calm and alert."
