Cheap car insurance cover not stretching to Europe

Two out of three UK motorists who took their car across the channel in 2006 were not comprehensively covered by insurance in Europe, according to the latest research by a cheap car insurance provider.

M&S Money has found that many of those who motored across Europe in 2006 lacked breakdown cover and motor insurance. The study showed that just one in five had a breakdown policy that would protect them, and only one in three had a car insurance policy that included European cover.

Many of those who have inadequate cover mistakenly believe that their UK comprehensive car insurance will cover them for driving in European countries too. However, European cover is often one of the extras which companies cut out in order to attract customers with cheap car insurance quotes.

A spokesperson for moneysupermarket.com commented: "[Comprehensive cover] is worth considering as thieves often target cars with foreign number plates. There's also a greater risk of having an accident when you're driving in unfamiliar places on the wrong side of the road."

M&S Money points out that comprehensive car insurance and breakdown cover are both standard features of its motor insurance policies.
