European drivers told to check their cheap car insurance policy

Motorists holidaying abroad with their cars are being urged to check that their cheap car insurance policy gives them adequate cover.

RAC Insurance is recommending that drivers give their motor insurance company a call before they set off on their summer holiday in Europe to ensure that their policy provides the cover they need.

This is because whilst many cheap car insurance companies do offer European driving cover, not all include it as standard on their policies. Some motorists may find that they have to pay extra for European car insurance - something the RAC says is well worth it.

A spokesperson for the company said: "Getting car insurance if you're driving abroad is as valuable as getting travel insurance. You never know what's going to happen and it's not so much to do with what might happen to your own car, it's to do with liability as well.

"From a medical point of view, if you injure somebody else, that's where the real money's going to come into it."
