Cheap car insurance company highlights issue of staged accidents

Royal & SunAlliance has revealed that despite the fact staged accidents costs the UK more than £1.5 billion a year, a large number of Britons remain unaware of the problem.

A survey by the cheap car insurance company revealed that 41% of motorists in the UK had not heard of the practice of faking car crashes for profit.

The exact number of staged accidents is not known but researchers estimate that there have been more than 22,500 fraudulent motor insurance claims since 1999. In recent years the trend has been observed to be getting worse, creating concern about how the fraud can be identified.

It is the motorist who suffers from this type of crime, as motor insurance companies will spread the cost of increased car insurance payouts amongst their existing customers. This means that cheap car insurance quotes will be increasingly difficult to find if the number of claim fraudsters increases.

A spokesman for Royal & SunAlliance said: "Staged motor accidents are on the rise and are potentially extremely dangerous.

"Not only do they cost honest drivers millions of pounds each year, but they also put innocent motorists in danger."

He went on to advise motorists to look out for suspicious circumstances if there is a car crash.

"There are usually some tell-tale signs that you have been involved in a fraudulent collision. Motorists should pay attention to people braking suddenly in front of them for no apparent reason or otherwise driving erratically," he finished.
