Man convicted of speeding can now get cheap car insurance

A man from Somerset is now able to get cheap car insurance quotes once again after his speeding conviction was overturned by the High Court in London.

John Coombes felt that he was convicted unfairly when he was caught by a police speed trap at Horrington, near his home town of Wells.

He argued that he could not see one of the signs that should have informed him of a change in the speed limit because there was an overgrown hedge obscuring it.

Mr Coombes said: "What's the point in paying council tax if they don't cut the bloody hedge? I have not got x-ray vision going down the road."

He had previously tried to appeal his conviction in both Mendip Magistrates Court and Bristol Crown Court but was told that the signs were, "appropriate, of the correct height and shape, and in the correct place."

However, two High Court judges have now agreed with Mr Coombes' point of view, overturning his conviction.

Mr Coombes' solicitor said: "This judgment has confirmed what many motorists have always felt.

"Namely, that they should not be convicted if trees and hedges overhanging or obscuring signs mean they cannot properly see the signs, and they are not given adequate notice of changes in the speed limit."

Mr Coombes will have the penalty points for speeding removed from his driving licence, allowing him to get low cost motor insurance quotes once more.

Corrine Aldous, of duck2water Car Insurance Services, said: "Well it is good that Mr Coombes can get cheap car insurance again now but this figure is probably tiny in comparison to the amount he spent proving his case."
