Cheap car cover hit by rise in UK motor crime

An increase in motor crime is causing cheap car insurance rates to be higher in crime-hit blackspot areas across the UK, according to a new study just published.

The research has found that drivers who live in towns, cities and other places prone to higher crime rates face premiums up to £250 higher than less risky areas.

Households in London and north west England face paying the most for motor cover compared to other British regions because of higher crime patterns, according to study findings.

Motorists in this region can pay an average of about £845 a year, while in the south west of the UK, premiums drop hugely to a more reasonable average of about £570.

Useful measures highlighted in the survey by comparethemarket.com that can reduce the cost of car insurance:

  • Park vehicles in garages, saving about £26 on annual policies.
  • Fit a car alarm or steering lock
  • Resist modifying a car to keep premiums as low as possible

Commenting on the report, insurance expert Jeremy Moll said, "Motorists in areas of high vehicle crime can look to lower the price they pay for their cover in the first instance by shopping around when they look to renew their policy."

While cheaper cover is apparently more readily available in south west Britain, don't give up if you live elsewhere - the duck2water motor cover firm offers some of the cheapest car insurance quotes wherever you live.
