Sand could mean end to cheap car insurance for elderly driver
An elderly driver from Germany may well have seen the end of cheap car insurance rates after he followed the directions on his GPS rather too closely.
He was travelling down a road near Hamburg when he came across some diversion signs. All the other cars on the road were obediently turning off but Volker Heinmann, 80, had other ideas.
Believing that his GPS knew better, he disregarded the warning signs and carried on down the road.
Mr Heinmann explained: "I thought the navigation system knew a shortcut and it seemed to be a good one. There was not other traffic on the road so I sped up - and hit a pile of sand."
The road, unsurprisingly, had been under construction and workers had left a large heap of sand in the middle of it.
A spokesman for local police, Jan Kalisch, commented: "We had a call from the elderly man and found him half a mile along the closed section of road standing with his wife beside the car, that was wedged firmly in the sand.
"Both were unhurt, but the car had to be towed to a garage."
duck2water Car Insurance Services spokesperson Corrine Aldous said: "It isn't the first time we've heard about motorists relying too heavily on their GPS and ending up in a bit of a sticky situation.
"However, we are glad to hear that the old couple weren't hurt, although if they have to claim on their motor insurance premium then they may well lose their right to cheap car insurance."
