Even cheap cars are targeted by thieves
People who receive a cheap car insurance quote may be interested to know that BMW X5s and Range Rovers apparently are the two vehicles which are most likely to be stolen.
These desirable cars came top of the list of 10 most frequently stolen and recovered vehicles of 2010. They were closely followed by the BMW M3 and Audi RS4 models.
According to Tracker, a stolen car recovery systems company, many of the expensive cars are stolen using their own keys, rather than being hot-wired.
Car insurance holders have been encouraged to ensure that their vehicles are locked when left unattended, and have also been told that to reduce the risk of car theft, they should not leave their vehicle with the engine running.
Although thieves tend to target expensive cars, the VW Golf has also proven particularly attractive to opportunist criminals. The managing director of the Tracker firm, said that this proves that owners of high-end cars are not the only ones who should stay vigilant over vehicle security.
"In fact, 65% of the vehicles [Tracker] recovered in 2010 were worth £25,000 or less with just 6% being worth £50,000 to £100,000," he explained.
People who find a cheap car insurance quote have been reminded that insurers may refuse to pay out in the event of thefts which could have been prevented if the driver had been more careful with the keys and not left the engine idling.
