Quotes set to be cheaper by using new speed limiter
Advances in technology are prompting several UK insurers to offer new pay-as-you-drive schemes to motorists looking to obtain the cheapest car insurance quotes around.
The schemes use a new in-car tracker called Coverbox that calculates insurance costs by analysing customer driving habits and measuring mileage.
Monthly bills are then issued based on usage by drivers. Up to now, there has been little adoption of pay-as-you-drive.
But the firm that supplies Coverbox has revealed eight big players in the insurance industry are now signed up to provide the pay-monthly service. Six of them have been confirmed including Groupama, Equity Red Star, Allianz and The Co-operative.
Wunelli, the firm supplying the device, claims there has been renewed interest by insurers in pay-as-you-drive because the Coverbox system is new generation technology with a built-in tracker to help recover vehicles if stolen.
Wunelli's chairman Sandy Dunn said, "It will work very much like a monthly utility bill."
The main difference is that low risk drivers who use their cars little and in off-peak periods will benefit from lower costs, perhaps providing some of the cheapest car insurance quotes and premiums on the market today for motorists.
