New dual carriageway may put cheap car insurance at risk
A road design expert of the Automobile Association (AA) has warned that a brand new £25m stretch of dual carriageway between Belfast and Dublin poses a serious accident risk.
It is feared that the inclusion of several outdated 'gap junctions' on the Beechhill road may result in collisions, which could see people injured and a loss of cheap car insurance rates for those involved.
Andrew Howard, of the AA, said that letting cars turn right across dual carriageways was an idea that "belongs to the 1960s and 70s."
He went on: "Junction accidents are a major killer on this type of road and this sort of dated design is asking for such accidents.
"The flyover junctions cost a lot more, but they are a worthwhile investment when you are looking at a £1.3m cost benefit for a road death."
However, the Roads Service argues that the new road exceeds safety standards for its purpose.
Corrine Aldous, of cheap car insurance company duck2water Car Insurance Services, commented: "This piece of road has had a huge amount of money invested in it and it is unlikely that the safety implications of its design have not been considered.
"However, as a motor insurance firm of course we believe it should be closely monitored to ensure it is as safe as reasonably possible for drivers."
