Sat nav thefts could pose risk to cheap car insurance
Many of the millions of UK drivers who have a sat nav system installed in their car do not realise they are making themselves a target for thieves, thereby risking their cheap car insurance.
Sat navs have been revealed as one of the most enticing items for thieves in the Cambridgeshire area, with police seeing reports of one device being stolen every two days.
PC Phil Carpenter, from the Cambridgeshire community safety unit, said: "Satellite navigation systems are being left on display tempting opportunist thieves.
"In the past two weeks, we have had around £2,000 worth of satellite navigation equipment stolen from vehicles across the Huntingdonshire and the Fenland area."
He went on to warn motorists to remove sat nav systems from their cars before leaving them unattended.
However, it is not just in the Cambridgeshire area that sat nav thieves are at work. The trend has been seen all over the country and police in Banbury have been looking at why they are such a popular target for criminals.
David Campbell, a crime reduction advisor for the area, said: "Top of the range system cost a thousands pounds and more. In some cases the mountings that hold them are less secure than car entertainment systems and this makes them a prime target for thieves."
Motorists who are victims of sat nav theft may lose their cheap car insurance if they are able to claim on the motor insurance policy. However, not all policies include this cover and drivers are advised to check with their car insurance company to find out whether they are insured against this kind of theft."
