Cheap car insurance firm discovers drivers overspending on fuel

Research conducted by a cheap car insurance company has suggested that UK motorists could be paying £375 more a year for fuel than they have to - simply because of their driving style.

Yesinsurance, which provides online car insurance quotes, has predicted that many motorists will be looking at a 2008 fuel bill of around £1,500.

However, its study found that if drivers took their foot off the accelerator a little and drove more moderately, they could reduce that figure by several hundred pounds. What's more, in addition to these savings, their new-found fuel efficiency means that their car will emit less carbon dioxide.

A spokesperson for the cheap car insurance firm said: "Environmental damage and the rising cost of fuel are both of concern to today's motorists, and they have a great impact on the future we are handing over to our children's generation."

"Avoiding fast acceleration, controlling speed and completing simple maintenance tasks, such as checking tyre pressure and cleaning filters, can help to reduce CO2 emissions by up to a tonne a year and save up to 25% on fuel."

Yesinsurance has put together ten tips to help motorists achieve better miles per gallon in their car. These tips include turning off the air con, keeping tyres pumped up to the right pressure, switching off the engine whilst waiting, and chucking out all unnecessary possessions which add weight to the car.
