Bluetooth leading to loss of cheap car insurance

A cheap car insurance company has revealed that there is a new threat to car security and motor insurance premiums: Bluetooth bandits.

Cornhill Direct has revealed that high tech thieves have started using Bluetooth devices to detect which cars contain sat nav systems and mobile phones.

A technology expert commented: "For thieves, Bluetooth is a dream come true. Devices left switched on with Bluetooth activated can be pinpointed by thieves to within 10 metres. And they don't need anything more sophisticated than a mobile phone."

Hampshire Police have revealed that thieves are already using this technique in the county. They believe that so-called Bluetooth bandits were responsible for seven instances of theft from cars in one night.

A spokesperson for Cornhill Direct said: "We would urge people not to leave anything of value in their cars but if they must, they should always be kept in a locked glove compartment with the Bluetooth device turned off.

"You should also make sure you change the name of your device as soon as you get it. You can generally do this in the service settings of your device, be it a mobile, satnav or laptop.

"Give it a name you'll recognise, but which is meaningless to anyone else - that way you'll never be advertising what you have in your pocket or glovebox," the cheap car insurance company's spokesperson advised.
