Drivers celebrate return to cheap motor insurance quotes after police mistake

More than 150 drivers from Cornwall can rest easy knowing that they can once again get cheap motor insurance quotes after their speeding convictions were overturned.

Although the motorists were indeed caught driving over the 40mph speed limit at Whiddon Down, an error in the paperwork meant their convictions have had to be reversed.

The mistake was revealed after the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and the police noted the incorrect summonsing form had been issued to 170 drivers.

A meeting between a number of parties, including the Devon and Cornwall Safety Camera Partnership, the CPS and the HM Court Service, ensued and it was decided that an overturning was the only available option.

A spokesman for the police said: "An internal investigation has been commenced to establish how the processes have been incorrectly applied.

"We are working with all agencies involved with the Safety Camera Partnership to ensure the continued accuracy of the administrative processes, and to ensure effective detection and prosecution is carried out."

Motorists affected by the error will be contacted by letter and informed that they will be refunded any money paid in fines and have relevant points removed from their driving licence.

It is not known whether any of the drivers lost their licence when they were convicted. However, there is no doubt that all will be delighted at the opportunity to tell their cheap car insurance company about the mistake, and regain former low cost motor insurance quotes.
