Elderly drivers face costly motor insurance quotes
The Mail on Sunday has highlighted the problem which elderly drivers face in finding cheap motor insurance quotes.
It revealed the difficulty which one 84-year-old man is having when it comes to getting a good deal on his car insurance, as three quarters of insurance companies refuse to insure drivers over the age of 80.
Many well-known firms, such as More Than, esure, Norwich Union and Tesco, have upper cut-off ages of either 70 or 80 for new customers, leaving elderly motorists with very little choice.
The Mail on Sunday points out that there are just four companies which specialise in motor insurance quotes for older drivers: Help the Aged, Saga, Age Concern and RIAS.
However, the problem extends beyond simply finding a company that will provide insurance cover. It also remains very hard for elderly motorists to get a deal which offers good value for money.
This is partly due to the higher value of their insurance claims and partly due to their higher accident rate, but this combination makes cheap motor insurance quotes an impossibility for even those who have maintained a clear driving licence for many years.
