Stolen car found in 12 minutes

Police forces around the UK are starting to see the benefits of telematics technology as a way of finding stolen cars. Similar technology is used by some cheap online car insurance companies, and car buyers may soon be urged to invest in cover which comes with a telematics device.

Reports reveal that a Land Rover Defender, stolen in Oldham, Manchester, at 2.47am was recovered just twelve minutes after it had been taken without consent, at 2.59am.

The speed at which police were able to find the Land Rover, broke vehicle recovery records; all thanks to a tracking device in the car, which led them to within 5 meters of its location.

The Defender was equipped with a tracking device which used GPS. A similar GPS system is present in the telematics technology offered by some cheap online car insurance companies, such as duck2water.

Telematics could end up saving a lot of police time and help reduce vehicle owners' stress if their car is stolen.
