Controversial speed camera plans unpopular

Although it could help motorists get cheaper car insurance, the move by the Sustainable Development commission to introduce new average speed cameras on motorways is likely to be unpopular with most motorists.

Already under criticism from the motoring union Safe Speed, the controversial plans are to target motorway drivers that exceed the 70mph limit.

Unlike normal speed cameras, the average speed cameras prevent motorists evading detection by slowing down and then speeding up when out of range as they measure a car's speed over a prolonged period.

In a report published on January 25th, the Commission claimed that the average speed cameras would cut carbon emissions by 1.4 million tonnes as only 52% of motorists currently stick to the motorway speed limit.

However co-founder of Safe Speed, Claire Armstrong said: "For any organisation to call for any car behaviours to be altered in favour of unproven carbon emissions shows what a total shambles Road Safety has reached in this country."

Despite its criticisms, if the plans were successful, they could help cut the number of car insurance claims and serious motorway accidents which would not only lead to cheaper car insurance but would also cut the amount of road deaths on the motorways.
