Cheap quote harder to find after car is stolen

British drivers are having a more difficult time finding the cheapest car insurance than ever before and the costliness of motoring is being further exacerbated by a so-called ‘tax' on motorists who have their car stolen.

Having to deal with the theft of a vehicle is a stressful ordeal in itself, as many motorists rely on their vehicle to get to work as well as it sometimes being the only way to get around in a rural area.

However, the experience is set to become even more stressful and costly as the Home Office revealed that drivers are now being charged approximately £100 for towing fees, and, in some cases, having to pay £20 a day to keep their car in a police storage facility.

Having a car stolen can increase a motorist's car insurance quote, so asking road users to pay more on top of that, simply to recover their vehicles, can quickly turn into an extremely costly endeavour for the driver.

Stolen cars are often towed back to a safe storage area when they are left on dangerous parts of road or parked illegally, in order to stop further damage or inconvenience to other road users or the car owner. Unfortunately, when a private towing company is used the charge can then be passed onto the owner of the vehicle.

A spokesperson for the RAC Foundation stated, "It is clear that three people benefit from a car being towed away to a place of safety – its owner, the police and the insurer. The big problem is that only one pays – the owner. That cannot be right."

In order to ensure that they keep the cheapest car insurance possible, drivers should make sure that their vehicle is left in a safe place if the car is to be left for a while, especially overnight.
