Driving on used tyres could be dangerous

It is important for UK motorists who are shopping for the cheapest car insurance to know that used tyres must be safe for road use.

Each week it has been revealed more than 2,000 tyres which are suspected to be illegal and dangerous are being brought through Northern Ireland and sold to unsuspecting motorists.

The National Tyre Distributors Association (NTDA) has called for authorities to improve tyre regulations, and to prevent the sale of these dangerous, sub-standard tyres.

A statistic from 2010 showed that 95% of second-hand tyres had been sold illegally as they had not been labelled as ‘part-worn'.

Paying as little as £10 for a used tyre as opposed to around £45 for a new one is what makes them so appealing to the public, however, if the tyres are unfit for the roads, a motorist's car insurance policy could be affected as well as their lives being put in danger.

Part-worn tyres are defined as having been used previously and removed from another vehicle. This could mean that might have been taken from a vehicle involved in a road accident or simply ones which have begun to show slight signs of ageing.

In order to keep their cheapest car insurance intact, by avoiding an accident or points on their licence, UK motorists need to ensure that the tyres they are using have been examined by a reputable professional to guarantee their roadwoirthiness.
