January storms make cheapest car insurance deal difficult to find

With the recent storms which have battered Britain still fresh in our minds, it is little surprise that there was a 28% increase in car insurance claims over the first five days of January compared with last year, according to the AA.

January will probably have been a tough month to find the cheapest car insurance for most motorists, as from 1 January to 5 January there were an average 1,100 weather-related claims per day. This number of car insurance claims is higher than the start of 2010 when the UK was covered in a blanket of snow.

The director of AA Insurance said dislodged roof tiles and trees or tree branches were the most common causes of car damage. He went on to say that the company has heard claims involving just about every object which is not tied down, including reports of TV aerials, a church hall roof, wheelie bins and even a dinghy causing vehicle damage.

The Meteorological Office has been met with criticism over its lack of warnings given for the dangerous weather, failing to predict the severity of gusts which reached more than 100mph in the Pennines on January 5. However, it did manage to warn Scotland and parts of southern England which were also damaged by the gusts two days previously.

Motorists who want to reduce the risk of their vehicle becoming damaged in storms may want to pay to keep their car in a garage if they do not have one of their own. Furthermore, they should avoid driving when severe weather warnings have been announced.
