Train robbery getaway car sells for six figure sum
Finding the cheapest car insurance is unlikely to be of much concern to the new owner of the Lotus Cortina that was used as a getaway car in the Great Train Robbery. After paying a reputed six figure price for the car, the anonymous buyer is unlikely to be too concerned with finding the cheapest car insurance quote.
The distinctive looking white Cortina with green flashes on the sides only has 3,000 miles on the clock and was bought new by criminal mastermind Bruce Reynolds.
Built by Ford, the Lotus Cortina was one of the coolest and fastest cars around in the early 1960s. Its twin engines could produce 115bhp and had a 0-60 time of fourteen seconds which although modest by today's standards, it made it one of the quickest cars on the road in its day.
When first released the car was worth £1,100 but thanks to its historic past, the new owner is believed to have paid 100 times that for the notorious gangster car which still retains its original registration plate of BMK 723A.
With its history of being driven by world renowned criminals, car insurance companies may be unwilling to give the car's new owner the cheapest car insurance quote.
