Checking car insurance before your break may shrink bills

A warning for holiday motorists to check their car and travel insurance policies has been issued by The Observer national newspaper.

The paper highlighted key areas to watch for - do not assume fully comprehensive cover abroad is the same as the UK, or you are covered by travel insurance - and be aware that breakdown cover may not be included.

Happy times abroad can be wrecked by minor accidents if inflated excess charges are applied - even if motorists have paid for fully comprehensive insurance.

The paper highlighted the case of a London woman who had to fork out £1,237 in excesses for a headlight and wing bump that would have cost £200 in the UK to repair.

• Check recovery times for breakdowns

Be warned, read the small print - EU laws require insurers to only offer third-party cover. This means damage to another car or person should be paid but theft, accidental damage or accident claims may not.
