Cheap car insurance provider warns of Christmas driving dangers
Sainsbury's Bank has warned motorists that they could be putting their cheap car insurance rates at risk this Christmas if they do not drive sensibly.
It has been highlighting the all-too-common but dangerous habits of speeding and driving whilst tired, which many motorists will succumb to over the Christmas period.
The bank, which also provides cheap car insurance, has drawn on accident rates from this year to demonstrate the risk we are all taking when we get into our cars. Its statistics show that 1.14 million drivers - that is almost 1 in 20 motorists - have had an accident between April and September 2006.
The fact that two thirds of those who crashed over this period were men will mean that these findings have a particularly strong message for male drivers, who are more likely to engage in dangerous driving behaviour.
Many of these motorists will have had to claim on their cheap car insurance policy and will have lost their no claims bonus, thereby putting up the cost of their motor insurance quotes for the next few years.
Richard Clark, manager of car insurance for Sainbury's Bank, said: "Christmas brings with it the threats of drink and fatigue and in the run up to the festive season we urge people to take extra care.
"If planning a long journey to visit family of friends, make sure you take regular breaks; if planning to drink alcohol, plan your arrangements in advance and organise alternative transport; if you are running late, don't be tempted to speed.
"Taking these steps should dramatically reduce the number of accidents on our roads and ultimately save lives."
