Cheap car insurance technology doubles as congestion cutter
The director of Moneysupermarket.com has said that he believes the future of cheap car insurance lies in pay-as-you-drive policies.
Richard Mason has been speaking out following the publishing of the Eddington Transport Study, which was a project jointly commissioned by the HM Treasury and the Department for Transport.
He said: "The Government has unveiled its long awaited plan to introduce road pricing to alleviate congestion. This will mean the unpopular 'big brother' element of tracking motorists wherever and whenever they drive.
He believes that the pay-as-you-drive technology employed by cheap car insurance companies may be used for this purpose as it can relay the necessary information about time and location of people's cars.
"I believe this will spawn more pay-as-you-drive insurance policies on the market," he commented.
However, Mr Mason warned that it may take motorists quite some time to get used to the idea of having their movements recorded by the black boxes. A recent survey found that a quarter of British drivers would not even consider having this technology fitted in their car, even if they could get much cheaper motor insurance quotes.
Despite this, he thinks that motorists will come around to the idea if suitably cheap car insurance could be introduced.
He commented: "With the potential savings that can be made on the cost of insurance, I think it is clear that pay-as-you-drive schemes and black box technology will be a big part of our motoring future."
