Motor cover costs soar

The search for cheaper car insurance among young drivers shows no sign of abating after one insurer revealed there has been a dramatic rise of 11.5 per cent in premiums for this age group over the past year.

A study by the firm found that the increase, which is a rise of almost four times the inflation rate during the year 2008, affected all drivers under 25 years old.

Young drivers currently face an average premium of more than £1,460 should they seek car insurance quotes from the study organisers, the Co-operative Insurance.

The Co-op feared an entire generation of young drivers are set to become uninsurable due to the higher risk they pose on UK roads.

However, the ETA (Environmental Transport Association) said it was possible for young motorists to locate lower-priced deals.

An ETA spokesman said some policies offer cheaper car insurance provided young drivers stopped driving late at night which is when most crashes happen that involve youngsters.
