Cheap car insurance DD gets councillor in trouble

A Swindon councillor was caught driving without insurance after an error by his cheap car insurance company.

The 27-year-old Conservative councillor, who represents the Covingham and Nythe ward, was stopped by police in February 2007.

Police noticed that there was no tax disc on the car, which he claimed must have fallen off.

Upon further investigation, they also discovered that his motor insurance policy had expired and he was in fact uninsured.

The councillor commented: "Not displaying the tax disc was my mistake as it had fallen off. I put my hands up to that, but it is something that could happen to anyone. Then it transpired that the direct debit for my insurance had been cancelled without anyone notifying me."

He said that his policy was with cheap car insurance company Norwich Union and commented that it was "a complete mystery" as to what had happened.

When sentencing him, the chairwoman of Swinton Magistrates' Court said: "You are not in the normal run of young men who appear before us for driving without insurance. You were just negligent at noticing what was going on in your bank account."

He received a fine of £700 for driving without motor insurance and £50 for his tax disc offence, and he was also ordered to pay £43 in costs. His driving licence was endorsed with six points, something which could hinder him when it comes to finding cheap car insurance in the future.
