Irish government and motor insurance firms crack down on uninsured driving
Plans by the Irish Government and car insurance companies mean that Irish drivers who have not bothered to get a motor insurance quote will not be able to get their car taxed.
In a bid to crack down on the high numbers of motorists who are on the roads without a valid car insurance policy, the transport department of the government and the Irish Insurance Federation have joined forces to create and implement a new scheme.
The scheme means that when a motorist goes to get tax for their car, their details will be checked against motor insurance companies' records. If they are found not to have a valid car insurance policy, they will not be issued a tax disc.
This contrasts with the current system in which drivers may be asked for details of their motor insurance but which are not verified, allowing many uninsured motorists to tax their cars.
The problem of driving without car insurance is even greater in Ireland than in the UK, with around 6% of motorists committing the offence.
Corrine Aldous of duck2water Car Insurance Services, the cheap motor insurance quote experts, said: "Although we support any initiative to get uninsured motorists off the roads, this scheme might mean that many just drive without either tax or car insurance."
