Crush misery for tax and car insurance quote dodgers
Nearly 1,000 vehicles belonging to motorists who have avoided paying for tax or getting car insurance quotes have been crushed in Edinburgh in the last year.
Since May 2006, traffic wardens from NCP Services have been using new technology to identify cars in the city that are not covered by road tax. These cars are then impounded and disposed of within seven days if the owner fails to pay the outstanding tax and an £80 release fee.
According to NCP Services, around 40% of the impounded cars were crushed, whilst the others were either sold or claimed back by their owner.
The company also revealed that many of the cars that had been on the roads without tax were also not covered by motor insurance and did not have an up-to-date MOT.
A spokesperson for the wheel-clamping unit of the DVLA said: "These vehicles are dangerous and the best thing to do is immobilise them or get them off the streets as soon as possible.
"The people whose vehicles have been removed or clamped are hard-core offenders; not people who have just missed renewing their tax by a few days, but people who have shown no intention of taxing their vehicles."
Corrine Aldous, of online car insurance quote provider duck2water Car Insurance Services, commented: "If you don't bother paying for your road tax, the chances are that you are going to get caught at some point and have to pay a fine on top of the cost of the disc before you can drive it again.
"On top of this, you will have the inconvenience of having your car impounded, so all in all, it is much better to get your road tax sorted on time."
