CSW schemes threaten speeding drivers' cheap car insurance
Surrey drivers who risk their cheap car insurance by driving too fast are being targeted in a speed monitoring scheme.
The Community Speed Watch (CSW) scheme has been organised by Surrey Police but the actual speed monitoring is being carried out by trained volunteers.
CSW volunteers use special equipment to catch motorists driving too fast through their local villages.
The first time a driver is caught going over the speed limit, they will receive a "yellow letter" which informs them of the risks they are running by speeding. If they continue to speed, a "red letter" will advise them of the fact they will be prosecuted.
There are 12 of these schemes going on in various areas of Surrey, including Box Hill, Brockham, Headley, Westcott and Leigh, and they have proven to be very effective so far. Just one group of volunteers has recorded 3,500 motorists speeding since December 2005, although it is not known how many of these drivers have been prosecuted.
It appears that drivers' speeds are being reduced by the threat of being caught speeding and the thought of what this could do to their motor insurance premiums. In one area, the average speed has been reduced from 49mph to 41mph.
A spokesperson for Surrey Police said: "We think these [CSW schemes] are very effective and are proving very useful. We have noticed that drivers are more aware of the CSW teams and this is obviously a good thing."
Corrine Aldous, of the cheap car insurance company duck2water Car Insurance Services, commented: "It sounds like Surrey villagers are really seeing results from this kind of speed monitoring scheme.
"Perhaps we will soon see CSW schemes spreading across the country."
