New speed limits set to raise money for UK government
Many interested parties see new proposals to reduce speed limits on UK roads as a way to reduce an unacceptable death toll, while also helping motorists secure the cheapest car insurance rates.
However, within hours of the government consultation on the plan for safer British roads being announced, some sceptical commentators were suggesting it was more of a revenue generator than a life saver.
In a leading article from the Daily Telegraph, it was pointed out that this country has some of the safest roads in the world. The newspaper's leader found it odd that, with the nation facing many significant challenges to deal with at the present time, the government chose now to try to impose new 50mph and 20mph speed limits all over the place.
The Telegraph complains that the police already hound speeding motorists as assiduously as criminals, causing the relationship between police and public to be adversely affected as a result.
It argues, "The Government and the police have over the past decade conspired to turn road safety into a cash cow."
By developing an advanced speed camera network across the UK, the Telegraph said the long-suffering motorist was set to be further exploited for "a rich new seam of revenue".
It questioned evidence that cutting speed limits would reduce the numbers of fatalities and injuries on UK roads.
If casualty numbers could be cut, it might be possible for motorists to enjoy cheaper car insurance rates - but the Telegraph believed the government should find better things to do with its time.
