Cheap car insurance at risk from defrosting crime

As the icy mornings of winter approach, motorists across the country are being urged to keep their cheap car insurance intact by keeping their vehicles company whilst they are defrosting.

According to Greater Manchester Police, last year there were 150 incidents recorded in their area alone in which thieves stole cars that had been left alone to warm up.

Many of these might have resulted in drivers having to claim on their motor insurance policy, except that some cheap car insurance companies will not pay out if a car has been stolen whilst running unattended.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "People are tempted to leave their car engine running on a frosty morning while they stay inside the house to keep nice and warm. However, it only takes a few seconds for a thief to steal car when the keys have been left in the ignition.

"It's not only high-powered vehicles that are targeted and so our advice to all drivers is to stay in their vehicle when defrosting it and if at any time they need to leave the car, to make sure they lock it, remove any valuables and take the keys with them."
