Motorists playing away for car insurance quotes

Research by Consumer Intelligence has revealed that motorists are sacrificing loyalty for cheap car insurance quotes - and doing better for it.

The study showed that almost a third of UK motor insurance customers don't think twice about switching their provider, changing car insurance companies every one to two years. This compares to just 6% who are so loyal to their motor insurer that they will stay with the same one year after year.

A spokesperson for Consumer Intelligence commented: "Most insurers consistently offer their cheapest prices to new customers. As a result consumers know that the only way to keep premiums down is to switch regularly.

"We've seen a dramatic growth of aggregators recently: the clearest indication that today's consumers hold all the power in the insurance market."

According to the research body, the trend for searching around for cheap car insurance quotes is continuing, with more and more drivers choosing to get their motor insurance from someone other than their current insurer.

However, Consumer Intelligence believes that the car insurance industry is doing little to stop this trend, with the spokesperson saying: "Companies can reverse the effects of disloyalty by modifying the questions they ask new customers slightly. But our research shows that, so far, insurance companies aren't actively trying to attract customers with a propensity for loyalty."
