Cheap car insurance customers complain to insurers

Disputes between cheap car insurance customers and their providers soared by 70% in 2007, according to the Financial Ombudsman.

It has been revealed that disputes with some motor insurance companies rose to 3,416 between April and the end of September 2007, compared with 2,030 for the same period in 2006.

Many of the arguments were caused following road accidents where customers questioned their insurers about the cost and quality of repairs. In some cases, the Financial Ombudsman found that some providers even refused to pay for motor repairs.

A spokeswoman for the Financial Ombudsman commented: "If you have a car worth £30,000 or £40,000, repairs can easily run into £15,000 worth. But some insurers will insist the work is done by their panel garage, whereas the motorist may want it conducted by a specialist."

Another industry expert advised cheap car insurance customers to stick to their guns and said: "Motorists are strongly advised not to accept the first offer an insurer makes. It will pay them to hold out for more."
