Extra cover required by holidaying car owners
Over two million British tourists will take their vehicles abroad over the next few months, in an attempt to cut holiday travelling costs. Many of them will make the false assumption that their car insurance will remain fully comprehensive for the duration of their trip.
In reality most insurers will downgrade their policies to third party, meaning that drivers won't be covered against damage to their own motors.
As a representative of Moneysupermarket.com said, "A number of policies automatically downgrade as soon as you hit Continental soil."
As such it is highly important that drivers closely analyse the small print of their chosen cheap car insurance policy, to ensure that the level of cover will not be automatically reduced.
Motorists have been warned that some policies are regarded as completely void when taken to foreign countries. This may mean that drivers find themselves in the unfortunate position of having to pay to have their motors transported home after a breakdown.
An authority on motoring issues stated that hiring is often a far simpler option for anybody seeking comprehensive car insurance for a holiday. He also said that travellers should research the different driving laws and regulations of the countries they are visiting.
