Fatigue threatening cheap car insurance

Research from two leading road organisations has revealed that driver fatigue poses a huge threat to safety and cheap car insurance.

Breakdown company Green Flag and safety charity Brake got together to carry out a study into motorists falling asleep at the wheel after it was found that fatigue was an influential part of 100 fatal crashes in the UK in 2006.

The research incorporated the views of 1,000 people across the UK and found that 7% had fallen asleep whilst driving in the last twelve months; figures from which it can be extrapolated that fatigue could be affecting as many as 2.3 million motorists.

Whilst many of these did not result in accidents, the fact that drivers can nod off for as long as seven seconds when dozing at the wheel means that there is a high risk of a crash - and a costly motor insurance claim - occurring.

A spokesperson for Brake said: "The results paint a worrying picture, and have flagged up that sleeping at the wheel is a huge problem. We could be dealing with something of drink-driving proportions."

However, in an effort to protect their cheap car insurance, motorists reveal that they do try to take steps to prevent fatigue. 70% of those interviewed in the research reported that they plan to stop regularly on long journeys.

Unfortunately, 60% also said that they used ineffective fatigue-beating methods such as opening the window and listening to the radio.
