Torbay councillor held on drink-driving charge
A Torbay councillor has been charged with drink-driving, leading him to resign from the Tory group on the council, and face the potential of a fine, a ban from driving for at least a year, and the likelihood of a much increased car insurance quote when the ban expires.
He said: "I have yet to consult a solicitor but I shall be pleading guilty. I admit I was the driver, it was my car and I had a breath-test which gave a reading of 77, almost double the legal limit."
The incident caused no injury, but the councillor's BMW was in a collision with the wall of a local hotel. He admits to being "stupid", and will remain on the council as an independent Conservative.
The leader of the Conservative Group backed the councillor's decision, saying "We, as a group, do not condone this behaviour, but at the same time I believe he feels quite foolish and embarrassed about what was a silly thing to do."
Endorsements for drink driving remain on a licence for eleven years, which can affect anything from the ability to hire a car, the size of a car insurance quote from a cheap motor insurance provider, or even job prospects.
