Drink drive limit change could affect cheap car insurance

A possible change in the law regarding drink driving could mean that thousands lose their cheap car insurance rates if they have more than one drink.

A cut in the maximum blood alcohol limit from 80mg to 50mg per 100ml has been proposed in order to bring the UK in line with many other European countries.

Supporters of this suggestion believe that this change would reduce the number of accidents and injuries on our roads and stop the UK from further slipping down the European rankings for road safety. This would also impact on the number of motor insurance claims made, which may lead to cheaper car insurance for British drivers.

Stephen Ladyman, the road safety minister, is one of those in favour of the change but believes better enforcement is needed before altering the limit.

He commented: "I think it will happen. It will depend on how quickly we get enforcement at 80mg. If you go to 50mg before you have effective enforcement at 80mg, people will just ignore the 50mg limit."

This could result in many people being convicted of drink driving for being slightly over the limit which could well have a serious impact on their cheap car insurance rates.

A spokesperson for the Department for Transport (DfT) added: "The UK already has stringent penalties for drink driving and better enforcement than many countries, but that doesn't mean we can't do better."
