Thousands risk drink driving in mornings after heavy drinking
One way to miss out on the cheapest car insurance is to be convicted of drink-driving - yet a new AA survey reveals a massive 80 per cent of motorists drive on UK roads after a night's boozing.
According to the study, conducted on behalf of the Automobile Association (AA) by Populus, four in five drivers have got behind the wheel the morning following heavy drinking on the previous evening.
Over 11,000 AA members took part in an online poll to compile this latest research that also showed about half of the country's motorists know someone who drinks and drives.
Carol Whittingham, for the Campaign Against Drinking and Driving, said the survey was "shocking but not surprising in the least". She added, "Over the last seven or eight years more and more people are taking this risk."
AA president Edmund King said many motorists are found to be over the drink-drive limit when breathalysed in the morning after the night before. Mr King's advice to UK motorists was, "If in doubt, don't take the car out".
Alcohol levels in blood can still be above the legal limit in the mornings after drinking, yet motorists were found to risk a driving ban, police and court action, as well as hefty fines , by deciding to drive.
Drivers caught drink-driving and banned from the road would also miss out on the cheapest car insurance deals because insurance firms take a dim view of this serious - and avoidable - motoring offence.
