Uninsured driver faces prison sentence after fatal car accident

A Slovakian immigrant worker may pay the penalty for driving in the UK without car insurance when the case goes to trial on June 2nd. The driver, who allegedly killed a police motorcyclist after tail-gating another vehicle and then dangerously overtaking, has been warned that he faces a jail sentence as a consequence of the accident.

The packer from Bradford held a Slovakian driving license, but having lived in the UK for eighteen months and driven for seven months, had failed to take a British driving test or obtain a licence. He was also driving without motor insurance.

The accident occurred in October 2007 and the defendant has been warned that he faces up to fourteen years in prison.

This should serve as a warning to all drivers to get adequate training and to obtain full documents and car insurance.

In figures released yesterday by the Motor Insurers' Bureau, it was revealed that there are more than 40,000 uninsured motorists on the roads of the north east region. Most of these drivers probably feel that they will 'get away with it'; however, as this case in Bradford emphasizes, the penalties for dangerous driving and for not having car insurance can be extremely severe.
