Drivers given widely varied insurance quotes
The drivers of electric vehicles can expect to have a difficult time when it comes to obtaining a cheap car insurance quote, according to TheGreenCarWebsite.co.uk.
While researching the impact that environmentally friendly vehicles are having on the insurance industry, the website owners discovered that two of the biggest price comparison websites were unwilling to provide quotes for electric cars.
Ten high profile car insurance providers were also asked for their electric vehicle policy prices. Six of the insurers were unwilling to sell green car insurance through their websites, and two failed to list some of the most well known battery powered vehicles.
Furthermore the companies which were happy to offer electric car insurance made demands on their prospective customers to pay between £650 and £3,500. The Mitsubishi i-Miev proved far more expensive to insure than the Nissan Leaf and Peugeot iOn.
The editor of the website said, "Our research has shown that the first electric car buyers may need to be patient and hunt around for the best deal rather than accept the first quote they get."
She added that the owners of electric cars may become annoyed at the difficulty of picking up a reasonably priced green car insurance quote. However using comparison sites should help, and many electric cars eventually pay for themselves in the amount saved on petrol.
