Motorists given an insurance quote act irresponsibly
Motorists given a cheap car insurance quote are among those prepared to risk lives by driving the wrong way along Irish motorways, according to the Road Safety Authority (RSA).
This illegal act is being committed almost daily on a road designed for high speed traffic in Co Limerick.
The Senior Project Manager with the RSA, pointed out that the motorway network had expanded greatly over the last few years. He said that a large proportion of car insurance holders do not know how to safely navigate these high speed roads.
Three people travelling on foot and two motorists have lost their lives on the Irish motorways during the first few months of 2011 alone. This represents a significant rise on the figures given for the same period last year.
"If someone misses their exit they may feel it's okay to do a U-turn, or try and reverse back. One simply cannot do that in the high-speed environment of a motorway," said the RSA spokesperson.
A series of plans designed to improve Irish motorway safety have been proposed. They include ensuring that all learner drivers have received instruction on the appropriate way to behave on motorways from a fully qualified driving instructor.
Motorists who have been given this extra training will stand an improved chance of picking up an affordable car insurance quote.
