UK car insurance firm defends redundancy figures

A UK car insurance company is defending itself after being accused of letting more people go than the ten job cuts it had officially announced.

Hastings Direct, which is based in the East Sussex town of Bexhill, had announced that ten jobs would go after a staffing review was conducted.

However, some employees of the motor insurance firm apparently spoke out about the situation, saying that as many as 50 jobs had been axed since the summer months.

A spokesperson for the UK car insurance company said: "As already stated, planned role reductions at the Bexhill site; those relating specifically to an ongoing operational review will be minimal, up to ten at most.

"Redundancies at the Bexhill site have been considerably less than the anonymously speculated figure of '50 since summer'. Organisational changes are necessary if we are to maintain our effectiveness in the highly competitive market in which we operate."

However, Hastings Direct did confirm that there had been a reduction in employee numbers through natural wastage, where employees who leave or retire have not been replaced.
