Cheap car insurance worry for Rover owner

Most people are extremely careful not to damage their cars so as not to have to claim on their motor insurance. However, what would you do if your car was damaged whilst in a garage's possession and they asked you to sacrifice your cheap car insurance rates to pay the bill?

This is the situation that motorist Jason Humble found himself in when a window on his Rover 45 broke whilst at Reg Vardy in Darlington.

He said: "I got a call to say the window had come off the rails and dropped inside the door, shattering into pieces."

"They wanted me to claim off my car insurance but I refused."

Eventually, the garage agreed to fit a new window without charging Mr Humble.

Regional director for Reg Vardy, Michael Breen, explained: "One of our guys wound the window down to talk to a colleague and it collapsed. We paid for a replacement as an act of goodwill."

Unfortunately, the saga is not over for Mr Humble and he may yet be forced to claim on his cheap car insurance policy. Shortly after the replacement window was fitted and he drove the car home, the motor failed and it is now stuck shut.

He now faces a bill of £326 to fix the motor but is adamant that he will not be claiming on his motor insurance.

He said: "It wasn't me who broke it. It should not be me who pays for the repair."
