Insurance buyers must shop around or pay high rates

A popular financial website for UK consumers is urging customers to shop around for better car insurance rates at renewal times.

The call comes from financial journalist Cliff D'Arcy at The Motley Fool. He highlighted that new customers of insurance firms enjoy cheaper quotes at the expense of more loyal customers.

Many people contacted him after he alerted readers to what he describes as the motor insurance industry's "biggest con".

It seems it is common insurance practice to renew cover at higher premiums in an automatic fashion unless policyholders object.

Examples of the "con" are described in Cliff D'Arcy's column. One site visitor complained an insurer tried to raise her premium by almost a third in one year.
